How to Optimize Your Amazon Main Image

Learn how to run the right tests, analyze and optimize your Amazon main images with PickFu and boost your click-through rates (CTR).

Updated over a month ago

Your main product image on Amazon is crucial – it's the first thing shoppers see of your product listing and significantly influences clicks, conversions, and sales. Here's how we recommend testing and improving your main image using PickFu.

Steps to optimize your main image

To take action on the process below using PickFu, check out our Main Image Optimization Playbook. We provide more context and tips for each step, as well as poll templates and examples you can use to make testing easy.

1. Set clear goals & find your target audience

Define what success looks like for your product. Are you aiming for more clicks, higher sales, or a better conversion rate? Setting a clear goal will guide your testing process.

Just as important, you'll need to discover who your target audience is so you can get the most relevant insights. Check your Brand Analytics in Amazon to discover your key customer demographics. Or you could run an Open-Ended poll with PickFu to see who your product resonates with most.

Leverage PickFu’s audience filtering to only poll respondents who match your ideal customer profile. You can target based on demographic (age, gender, income), interests (coffee drinker, Amazon Prime member, dog owner), and more.

2. Run a competitor analysis poll

Test your main image against competitors to see how your product stands out. Use specific questions like:

  • "Which product would you click on first and why?"

  • "Which image looks most professional?"

This will help you get a baseline indicator of what your audience prefers (or dislikes) about the competiton's images, so you can make sure your improvements are headed in the right direction.

3. Test image variations

Use the feedback you got in the previous step to design alternative images that highlight your product's key selling points. Run PickFu tests to determine which version resonates most with your audience. Adjust and iterate until you have a clear winner.

4. Validate the new image with your target audience

Take your new and improved main image and test it against the original competitors' main images from Step 2. This will help you validate whether your changes resonated with your target audience – did it perform better this time around?

If so, launch your new main image on Amazon and watch your clickthrough rate increase!

Main image design tips

  1. Show the product clearly: Display your product prominently, outside its packaging, and ensure it's properly sized and proportioned.

  2. Highlight key features: Use real visuals to showcase ingredients, flavor profiles, or unique attributes. Avoid clutter or excessive graphics.

  3. Showcase variations: Include tags or swatches to display available colors, sizes, or styles.

  4. Leverage labels for impact: Add concise, descriptive text directly on the product or packaging to communicate key details (e.g., size, material).

  5. Add authentic details: Highlight value-adding elements like "Made in the USA" or eco-friendly icons to build trust.

  6. Use clean, professional layouts: Ensure images are simple, visually appealing, and comply with Amazon's requirements.
